Dear Journal,


 

It has been a while since you and I have had even a brief, albeit intimate chat. So I’ll try to tell you what I want to say to you; And you try to help me absorb insights from my soliloquy…


 

 Today was overall a good day… Alissa, Devorah, myself and one of the fellows picked up Breezas at the College of Marin. One of the gals had a breast reduction. I did not want to comment because I did not want to seem unduly imposing. It was frankly none of my darn business. I care, though, and only wish for her to be healthy. 


 

Nevertheless, all of us rocked out in the minivan to M.C. Hammer’s Can’t Touch This. We even went a few blocks out of the way to complete the rock-ability of the music in its ultimate soulfulness while the rapidly firing spokes rolled within the wheel’s revolutions. Our arms wildly flailed outside the downed windows for maximum wingspan’s jurisdiction— minus M.C. Hammer’s famous baggy pants…


 

I want to get into better communication with the One upstairs. I think a one-on-one is in order that might yield dialog-like results…I think spirituality is a temporal luxury that magically wields the power to transform our outlook through a filtration lens of purity that ennobles us to inundate ourselves with wholesomeness. 


 

But for many of us, the most wholesome form of spirituality is hardly an option for what we must endure on a daily basis with our f-d up minds and circumstances. And, unless taught and ingrained upon us by those more experienced at pleasant redundancy, we would not learn the habit of having faith in higher power at all.


 

That is why I say the appeal to spirituality should not be taken for granted: It is temporal and highly qualified…Therefore, it is a shame not to take advantage of this benevolent boon with gratitude while it is still a viable option. I certainly can do a better job of this awareness, especially over the past five years.


 

Sometimes, meditation can clear up our minds, debunking enough clutter to let us glimpse the magic that we often times are immersed in—even if we must reach way out of our normal wingspan to exercise a sense of humour when some of that magic dissipates… The improbable, albeit worthwhile, reaching for stardust while gravity tugs…


 

For example, I used to be 6 feet, one half inch. Now, I have been shrunk to a mere 5 foot 11. I don’t know if I can still play tennis “Big Dubs” with a Boom Box Service as a result of the shrink-down without the smirk of an old-timer!


 

To me, it also seems worthwhile to spend one day out of seven, from sundown until sundown, making a holiday out of slowing down, thanking G-d for the privilege of living while we are still alive. Reveling in the privilege of relaxation, we can reflect on the week, the spiritual highs and lows, and determine a course for improvement. It is also a fine occasion to spread mirth with friends and family. The sages proclaim it is an extra good deed to engage in sexual activity with a potential loving partner during this respite.


 

We may differentiate this relaxing sojourn from the rest of the week that often, in the moment, is not so spiritually insightful because of the distracting, frenetic bussle. This special day is infused with gratitude for the Gift of Life, bonded with togetherness, and encourages seeking continued solace with a higher power. During the rest of the week, the more prevalent, mundane elements of even prismatic living seem more remote and obscure. We may also read portions of inspirational scripture to psychologically enhance the aura of holiness. (Those writers of ancient scripture were extraordinary shrinks!) With this day, our purpose is renewed and we can sustain enough flickering awareness of G-d to hold us over until the next weekly, spiritual holiday.

The above being said, for several years I played competition tennis tournaments while virtually oblivious to the above-mentioned, day  of spiritual hiatus. There still is nothing quite like decimating a tennis opponent who is concurrently attempting to do you in first. High level tennis tournaments have a venerable place for our Ego-basking. The rankings await for bear-claw clutching! Through self-aggrandizement in the singular pursuits of winning and elusively chasing aesthetic perfection, to a lesser degree, our Egos rage onwards— like a fired up elixir for none other than Sir Arthur Stackerazz! Here’s a little intangible something for the holidays, all right! This reminds me of that Gordon Lightfoot song from almost half a century ago, “Sun down you better beware, if I find you’ve been creeping around my back stairs!”


 

I also truly enjoy the prospect of camping in Nature’s Vaster metaphorical Orchard Realm, replete with mountains and the sea….Nature makes us feel so infinitesimal, yet a grand, infinite part of Magnaminous life not only on the planet, but swirling around the Heavenly Conglomerates, too. Camping is a way to “unofficially slow down time” while almost “officially speeding up time…” Nature and Camping put us in our respective places, mostly for the better….We realize we are minute, yet integral facets of the Bigger Picture… Thus, nature deserves respect from us humans, and people deserve respect from ourselves because we are part of nature….


 

Toasting “L’Chaim” means to life. For me, a chai connotes “To prevailing over Life’s constant and enthusiastic challenges that lead to G-d’s awesome labyrinth of uncertainty….” Eating special challah once a week helps cement this notion. So does sipping a thimble of Manishevitz wine for a L’Chaim toast, “To Life!…” Just a thimble, mind you.
