The ancient Hebrew Macabees were attacked by the ancient Assyrians because the Jews would not adopt Hellenistic principles. The Jews held ground and they miraculously lit the Temple for 8 nights when there was just enough oil for one. Thus, the holiday of lights is for 8 nights so we may gratefully relish the slower and prolonged eclipse of time.
